about the book

In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle sets out to examine the nature of happiness. He argues that happiness consists in ‘activity of the soul in accordance with virtue’, for example with moral virtues, such as courage, generosity and justice, and intellectual virtues, such as knowledge, wisdom and insight. The Ethics also discusses the nature of practical reasoning, the value and the objects of pleasure, the different forms of friendship, and the relationship between individual virtue, society and the State. Aristotle’s work has had a profound and lasting influence on all subsequent Western thought about ethical matters.

J. A. K. Thomson’s translation has been revised by Hugh Tredennick, and is accompanied by a new introduction by Jonathan Barnes. This edition also includes an updated list for further reading and a new chronology of Aristotle’s life and works.

About Author
Aristotle

ARISTOTLE was born in 384 B.C. in Stagira in the northern Aegean. His father Nicomachus was physician to King Amyntas of Macedon. Aged about 17, he moved to Athens and became a student in Plato's Academy, where he remained for the next twenty years. Around the time of Plato's death in 347, he moved to Assos (on the coast of modern-day Turkey) where he attached himself to the household of his friend Hermias, the local ruler. He married Hermias' niece, Pythias. In Assos, and then in Mytilene, he pursued his growing interest in marine biology. In 343 he returned to Macedonia to serve as tutor to King Philip's son, the future Alexander the Great. After Alexander succeeded to the throne, Aristotle returned to Athens and established his own school, the Lyceum. There he taught in a wide range of disciplines for the next twelve years. Following Alexander's death in 323, there was a surge of anti-Macedonian feeling in Athens. Aristotle was charged with impiety. He went into voluntary exile in Euboea, where he died the following year, at the age of sixty-two.

Adam Beresford is Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, where he teaches Philosophy and Greek. He has previously translated Plato's Protagoras and Meno for Penguin Classics.

Book Review

I've taught through several translations of the Nicomachean Ethics, most of them more or less like the others, but when Beresford's translation came out it was a revelation. It is the best translation of the NE for students, hands down: technically accurate, fluid and clear, accompanied by a generous helping of insightful notes and an excellent introduction. (Even beginning students - nay, especially beginning students - should read the "Note on the Text" describing the translator's approach.) Its great virtue is to put readers in a position to wrestle with difficult ideas, without having first to bushwhack through unfamiliar prose. It is now my go-to text for introducing students to the NE, and even old hands will find new insights in these pages. ---Rusty Jones, University of Oklahoma
